Artist Biography

I began as a traditional quilter almost 40 years ago. I very quickly became bored with traditional quilting, but knew that I wasn't an artist because I couldn't draw like "real artists" do. (Oh?) Then, I started designing my own quilts, though still in a geometric style. I was good at the geometry of the design process. Over the years, my work became more and more original and free. My latest fabric pieces have no straight lines or seams. They often incorporated fabric on which I've printed images. I've even added "stuff" to them, including melted Tyvec.

About 5 years ago, I took a workshop from Carlton Wing, who taught me a slick way to collage magazine images without messy glue. This technique took over my life for a couple of years. I made collage after collage, culminating in a 12 piece series commemorating the 20th anniversary of my mastectomy.

About that time, I discovered Adobe Photoshop and digital collage. As had happened before, I became obsessed with this new technique. There is so much to learn and so many wonderful things to do with a program like Photoshop.

Of course, hyperactive Susan couldn't stop there. I was becoming more and more fascinated with mixed-media collage. I began to experiment with paints, papers, and "stuff". I'm still learning and experimenting; there are so many more supplies that I need now. Egads! My whole house will become my studio if I'm not careful!!!! Okay, so what's wrong with that?
